The handling of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world perfectly illustrates the need for integrity in the management of crises. When Transparency International released its Corruption Perceptions Index 2020 in January, it was evident how corruption can complicate matters during a pandemic.
The report ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption based on input from experts and businesspeople. Most countries still fail to tackle corruption effectively.
The group offers the following recommendations:
- Mainstream anti-corruption policies
- Increase transparency in public contracting
- Strengthen audit and oversight institutions
- Enforce checks and balances
